IT Needs to Evolve
It's time to learn how to fly!
We are no longer at the top of our capacity. We need to evolve both our mindsets and our technology. But how do we do that? In this new Grin.eco Podcast episode we asked our expert, the CEO and co-founder of re:cinq, to help us find out!
The IT sector is currently producing more carbon emissions than flying. ✈️ And most of it is actually coming from the servers that we’re not even using.
Artificial intelligence (AI)
AI is simply a tool, but can easily become a double-edged sword. For now, it’s not the most significant contributor to the emissions. But with its increasing use in basically every sector, its impact will only grow.
However, this tool in the right hands can contribute tremendously to finding and implementing the solutions we need. As it’s already being used to, e.g. reduce IT sector emissions by targeting and removing various inefficiencies.
Electric cars
There are of course various aspects to this, such as the carbon cost of production, the actual infrastructure in place and the source of energy.
However, despite not perfect, electric cars offer an essential intermediate step in the evolution of our technology. Just as in biology, this is never a jump from walking to flying, we need the intermediate stages to evolve.
Circular economy in IT
With many of our devices, the main issue is the embodied carbon, so the carbon cost of producing the device (not the usage), which in case of e.g. smartphones, can be as much as 85% of its total emissions.
That’s why prolonging the life of our devices and various hardware can directly reduce carbon emissions and waste.
