"The Planet Remade" 🪐

How geoengineering could change the world

What is ‘geoengineering’? Redirecting the planet’s fate by taking it into our own hands. We often consider it science-fiction. But in fact, one could argue that not only is this idea not novel, it’s also already happening. The book “The Planet Remade: How Geoengineering Could Change the World by Oliver Morton is exploring this idea from both ethical and scientific point of view.

There are two important questions that lay the foundation of a conversation around climate change:

  • In your opinion, is climate change serious enough to take action?

  • How hard is it to reach net zero emissions?

With the growing population, expected to reach 10 billion by 2100, we will need more and more energy. 💡 We already have the power to dictate the flow of energy through all living systems, wipe out entire species and control the environmental nutrients. So this conversation is about much more than just the tools to engineer our planet. It’s also about empathy, ethics and justice.

Here are some other interesting topics that we mention in our article:

☁️ The stratospheric veil and altering the brightness of clouds.

🌋 The pros and cons of volcanic eruptions.

🦐 Savage plankton.

🌏 The power of terraforming.

☄️ The odds of dying in an asteroid impact.

The book is an insightful combination of poetry and science. I would argue that the two go hand-in-hand quite well. But for those of you who don’t currently have the time to explore the entire content, you might want to have a look at our summary.

The article is available now on our website. And don’t worry, we kept it short 👇
