The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

Happy October everyone! 🎃 New month, new us. And while it’s still early on the first day of the new month full of possibilities, let’s talk about food. ‘We all throw it. But we can’t all grow it.’ Let that be our motto for this month.

Last Sunday, 29th September 2024, was the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste as set by The United Nations General Assembly. We know that food waste is an issue. But exactly how big of an issue is it?

🎃 50% of all food waste happens at home

🎃 40% of the food in the USA is wasted

🎃 30% of all food that we produce never makes it to the table

🎃 19% of the 51 billion tons of CO2 emissions are due to ‘agriculture’ and ‘land use‘

🎃 If food waste was a country, it would be the 3rd biggest greenhouse gas emitter in the world

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. We talk a lot more about food waste in our articles on the “Sustainable(ish) living guide“ by Jen Gale and “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster“ by Bill Gates.

I know it’s a lot to digest (pun intended). But wait a second. It’s a new month today, remember? Knowing that a lot of food waste happens at home means that we can change it!

If you’re going grocery shopping today, just make a list first of what you want to cook in the next few days. Also, maybe grab a bite before you go. I know I often buy too much food when I’m shopping hungry.

It’s good to know about the difficult truths behind food waste. But let’s see this as an opportunity to do better today. Baby steps!

See you next week! 🌻
